Research & Development of the Zero-Emission Passenger Sailing Ship

Project description

Within this project it is planned to conduct research and development, as well as build the prototype of three-mast sailing ship intended for carrying 36 passengers. Key feature of the devised ship is its zero-emission characteristic realized through the sailing driven by either the wind or electricity from ship’s batteries. All other ship’s systems (such as AC, ventilation, kitchen appliances, pumps, lighting, water-heaters etc.) are also to be powered by ships batteries. In return, ship’s batteries are to be charged-up by the means of wind turbine, photovoltaic system, reversible propulsion propeller coupled with hydrokinetic motor/generator, and alternatively, by connection to the costal electric power grid.

Research and development program of this project is set to accommodate for final development of fully functioning innovative passenger sailing ship with zero-emission of exhaust gasses – completely ready for commercialization.

Project partners:

  1. Marine and Energy Solutions DIV Ltd.,
  2. BRODOSPLIT JSC,
  3. University of Split, Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Naval Architecture,
  4. Josip Juraj Strossmayer University of Osijek, Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Computer Science and Information Technology Osijek

Objectives and expected results:
The main goal of the project is the development of eco-innovation in a form of the passenger sailing ship for which the alternative propulsion technologies, as well as electrical energy sources management systems are to be developed in order to support its design as a function of zero-emission sustainable mobility. Achievement of project’s objectives is to be realized in collaboration with abovementioned scientific institutions, thus achieving yet another goal – enhancement of interaction and knowledge transfer between the institutions of higher education/scientific institutes and the industry - for the benefit of all parties included. Cruise ship industry and nautical tourism associated with it stand out as one of most perspective branches of tourism and shipbuilding at the same time, which in return justifies the great market potential of ships devised in abovementioned manner.
